Community Orchard
Back in late 2018 the Parish Council was thinking up ideas for how the ‘council paddock’ could better serve the community than just renting it out to one person. The conclusion, a community orchard. Not only could this provide free foraging of fruit to the community, it could also serve as a friendly, more intimate space for everything from contemplation, meeting family and friends, celebrations and smaller events and gatherings.
Fast forward to late November 2019 and thanks to local fundraising and two grants from the Tree Council, the orchard working group (on behalf of the parish council) and Broadhempston Village School spent two happy days planting up the new orchard with all kinds of fruit trees.
Since then the Orchard has been going from strength to strength with an army of willing volunteers helping to maintain and improve things. Seating and a shelter have been added and we still have lots of plans for the future. Despite the difficulties that 2020 has bought, our community orchard has already born fruit in providing a safe haven for the many who have discovered its pleasures.
